On the corner of Water and Pine is the old County Jail, built in 1891, a masterpiece of late 19th century second empire Victorian. It was also the site of several hangings and still has the infamous "hanging hook" on its second floor. Adjacent to the jail, at 804 Pine, is the Bastrop County Courthouse, which was built in 1883-1884 and altered substantially in the 1920s.
