Texas will be centerstage for a total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, 2024!  In Bastrop, at approximately 12:20 pm, the moon will start to block the sun causing an (almost) total solar eclipse. The sun is expected to eclipse until 2:25 pm. We're located right outside the path of totality, making Bastrop a great place to view the eclipse without having to maneuver the crowds. Ever wondered what happens to artifacts after they disappear from museum exhibits? The Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center is excited to unveil Behind the Scenes at the Museum, a special exhibit opening January 4th, 2024, that takes visitors on a fascinating journey through the hidden world of museum work. The Behind the Scenes at the Museum is on display in the Special Exhibition room at the Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center, 904 Main St in Bastrop, Tx, through March 30, 2024. It is free and open to the public.

“While exhibits may not come alive at night like in the movies,” explains Heather Bloom, Manager of Museum Collections for the Bastrop County Historical Society, “the magic of a museum lies in the education and inspiration achieved through story-telling and the collection of artifacts.”

Behind the Scenes at the Museum sheds light on the fascinating history and inner workings of museums, from their origins in mid-16th century art collections to the crucial roles of storage, provenance (ownership records), and the dedicated staff and volunteers who keep everything running smoothly.

Through engaging information panels and a diverse collection of artifacts spanning the 18th to 20th centuries, visitors will discover:

  1. The evolution of museums and collecting: Trace the history of museums from their early days as private curiosity cabinets to the public institutions we know today.
  2. The unseen work behind the scenes: Learn about the meticulous processes of artifact care, conservation, and documentation that ensure these precious pieces are preserved for future generations.
  3. The future of museums: Explore the exciting world of contemporary museum careers and the ways museums are adapting to engage new audiences in the digital age.
  4. Fun facts and trivia: Did you know that more people visit museums than attend professional sporting events? Discover surprising and delightful facts about the museum world.

Behind the Scenes at the Museum is free and open to the public from January 4 to March 30, 2024. This interactive exhibit is a perfect opportunity for families, history buffs, and anyone curious about the world behind the museum walls.

“Come experience the magic of museums like never before at the Bastrop Museum & Visitor Center!” Heather encourages the public.
